AUSTRALIAN stem cell scientists, among the world’s pioneers in the development of artificial blood, warn it will be a while yet before donors are no longer needed at the blood bank.

As their due date creeps closer, many pregnant women pack a go bag for the hospital: toothbrush, iPod, cute bringing-baby-home outfit, and possibly now a kit to collect and donate the blood in their babies’ umbilical cord.
